Conference Summary

Launched in 2015, this FASEB Science Research Conference (SRC) is the only recurring meeting dedicated to the science of human milk bioactives. This includes human milk composition and as well as bioactive function.

Attendees from basic and clinical science representing academic, clinical, industrial, and government organizations and those who maintain an interest in the structure-function relationships inherent to human milk will benefit from this conference. The SRC is organized to promote participation from diverse backgrounds and to support professional growth for scientists-in-training.

This conference will emphasize the following broad objectives: 1) Discuss the current science of the composition, diversity, and variation within human milk structure and their functional importance to infant health and subsequent developmental stages; 2) Promote meaningful cooperative and collaborative relationships between academia, clinical scientists, practitioners, industry, and government to maximize the field’s research impact and strengthen application at home and the clinic; 3) Expose participants to strong complementary research from overlapping and aligned fields in an effort to recruit additional scientific resources to study human milk. This, coupled with our training mission, is intended to enhance the growth of the scientific discipline.

The conference will focus on the latest research and engage participant discussion on:

  • Experimental models to study human milk bioactive function
  • Nitrogenous bioactives secreted in human milk
  • The glycobiology of human milk
  • The relationship between human milk and allergies
  • Maintaining integrity and function of human milk bioactives
  • Benefits of bioactive milk components for behavior and well-being
  • Influence of mother's nutrition and toxicology on breast milk composition
  • Ongoing and recently concluded clinical studies centered on human milk

There will be multiple opportunities for trainees to interact with leaders in human milk science. This includes dedicated meet-the-expert sessions and professional development opportunities for careers in academia, industry, and government.
