Conference Summary

Launched in 1993, this FASEB Science Research Conference (SRC) is dedicated to understanding the spatial organization and regulation of RNA biology within cells, which has taken center stage in many fields of research and includes cell polarity, developmental biology, synaptic plasticity, and neurodegenerative disease. The meeting will bring together established investigators, early career researchers, and trainees who share an interest in this topic.

The entire range of modern experimental approaches will be represented, including structural biology, interactomics, advanced microscopy, and organismal studies. Formal and informal interactions between participants from different disciplines will foster the exchange of ideas and the initiation of new collaborations.

The main themes of this meeting are: 1) Mechanisms of spatial organization of RNA biology; 2) RNA-mediated gene expression regulation in health and disease; 3) Emerging technologies for studying RNA biology.

Conference sessions will present cutting-edge research findings and foster discussion on:

  • Cytoplasmic mRNA transport
  • Translational control and mRNA surveillance
  • RNA biology in disease
  • RNA processing
  • RNP structure and biomolecular condensates
  • mRNA localization and local translation in neurons
  • RNA biology in developmental processes
  • Technological advances for studying RNA biology

In addition to keynote lectures from Thomas Cech, PhD (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 1989), Joan Steitz, PhD (Lasker-Koshland Special Achievement Award in Medical Science, 2018) and Elena Conti, PhD (Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine, 2014), this conference will feature seven oral sessions, three poster sessions, two interactive career development sessions ("Career Options for Trainees" and "Skills Development for an Academic Career") and "Meet the Speaker" lunches. Twenty-two applicants will be selected for short talks in the main oral sessions and there will be 20 poster flash talks. A number of postdoc/student travel awards will be available.
