Conference Summary

Protein lipidation is a central process in cellular function. Lipidated proteins play critical roles in numerous human diseases including cancer, infectious disease, and age-related disorders. This FASEB Science Research Conference (SRC) is the only international venue where these broad but closely interrelated topics are discussed at length and is the first choice for many scientists. First convened in 1995, this SRC is the twelfth meeting on this topic.

Historically, this SRC brought together scientists in fields ranging from mechanisms and consequences of acylation, prenylation, and post-prenylation processing of proteins; the synthesis and transport of intracellular lipids; and the importance of protein-lipid interactions for cellular signaling in specialized membrane domains. During the past two decades, the field has grown and become highly interdisciplinary. This unique meeting brings scientists together from different areas of specialization ranging from synthetic chemistry to clinical medicine to discuss new ideas and form new collaborations.

The conference is organized around four interrelated themes: 1) Recent advances in structural biology and enzymology of enzymes involved in protein lipid modification; 2) New developments concerning the roles of lipid modifications in various physiological processes and diseases, including cancer, infectious disease, and age-related disorders; 3) New methodologies for studying protein lipidation and lipidated proteins; 4) Recent therapeutic efforts targeting protein lipidation.

The conference sessions will cover the latest research and provide ample time for in-depth discussions on:

  • Structural biology of protein lipidation
  • Lipid metabolism and complex lipids
  • Lipidating enzymes and protein processing
  • Protein lipidation in disease
  • Chemical tools for studying protein lipidation
  • Lipid modification in physiology and signaling
  • Drug discovery in Protein lipid modification
  • Enzymology of lipidation

In addition to keynote lectures from Frank McCormick, PhD, FRS (University of California, San Francisco) and Matthew Bogyo, PhD (Stanford University School of Medicine), the conference will feature nine oral sessions, two poster sessions, a career development session, "Propelling Your Career Forward," and a "Meet the Experts" session. There will be 14 short talks selected from submitted abstracts, and all poster presenters will have an opportunity to give a two-minute "flash talk" prior to their poster. We welcome you to participate in lively discussions on these topics in a collegial atmosphere.
